With expert coaching from former professional players and experienced educators, competitive match play, and outstanding pastoral care, all set within our historic boarding houses and exceptional facilities, every aspect is designed to support growth both on and off the pitch.

Rugby Coaching Programme
Daily coaching led by experienced, inspirational staff — including professional and academy-level coaches — focused on developing technical skills, game understanding, physical conditioning, and rugby intelligence.
Small Group Skill Development
Breakout sessions tailored to positional needs and individual goals, with focused work on tackling, breakdown, kicking, passing, running lines, and set-piece skills.
Game-Based Learning and Match Play
Structured, competitive game scenarios designed to put learning into practice — including conditioned games, match play, and team challenges with performance feedback.
Full Board Catering by In-House Chefs

Being part of the Sedbergh Courses residential experience extends learning and adventure well beyond the daytime sessions; offering children 24/7 opportunities for personal growth, connection, and confidence-building. So, when the day’s activities wind down, the adventure continues — with evenings full of laughter and friendship that make the residential experience unforgettable.

Overnight Accommodation and Care

Pupils stay in our purpose-built boarding houses, where they’re cared for by experienced, nurturing staff who are used to helping children settle in quickly and feel at home. From the moment they arrive, we foster a warm and inclusive environment where kindness, routine, and support are at the heart of every day.

Our pastoral team works closely with the coaching and activity staff to ensure every child is happy, healthy, and engaged — whether that’s through a quiet chat before bed, encouragement after a challenging session, or shared laughter during evening activities.

We create a supportive setting that balances fun, structure, and care — helping children to grow in independence while always feeling safe, seen, and valued.

FAQs

Meet the Coaching Team

Russell Earnshaw

As a player Russell won the Heineken Cup with Bath and played for England on the IRB Sevens circuit, at the 1998 Commonwealth Games in Kuala Lumpur, and was part of the squad that played in the IRB World Series tournaments from 1999 to 200. Then as the assistant coach for England 7s he won back to back Dubai titles, Twickenham 7s and England's first ever victory at the Wellington 7s. He then worked alongside John for the England Rugby Elite Development Pathway.

John Fletcher

John Fletcher is the current Head of Player Pathway and Coach Development for the Scottish Rugby Union and has recently been appointed as Sedbergh School's Rugby Advisor. He started out as Head Coach of the Newcastle Falcons Academy being promoted to Senior Director of Rugby. He was soon head hunted for a role with the RFU as Head Coach of the England U18 team with the clear brief to prepare players to win the World Cup. John has been instrumental in developing high performing young players such as Anthony Watson, Owen Farrell, George Ford, Maro Itoje and the Vunipola brothers.

Tom Mitchell

Tom Mitchell has had a 10 year career at the top level of international 7s rugby. After graduating from Bristol University (BA English & Philosophy) he went to Oxford University for his postgraduate studies. Immediately after getting his Blue he was picked by England 7s to make his World Series debut in 2012. Since then he has served the team as captain for 6 years and also led Team GB 7s to two Olympic Games. In Rio in 2016 Tom and the team came home with a silver medal, the first Olympic medal in the sport for Great Britain. Tom’s 7s rugby career also included two Commonwealth Games appearances, including a bronze medal in 2018. And three Rugby 7s World Cup appearances. The time has come for Tom to move onto new career paths as he steps away from playing professionally. He is exploring a range of roles including media work in 7s, writing, performance mentoring and coaching.
