Based at Casterton, Sedbergh Preparatory School

The STEAM Course at Sedbergh Prep is a creative, practical experience where children learn through doing. It is a chance for students to put develop their knowledge and put it into practice as they design and build a range of exciting products. They will draw on a wide range of disciplines such as science, mathematics, computing and art and get hands-on with exciting tools and machinery.

The course will be based in our Prep School's dedicated design workshop which includes a robotics workshop, laser cutter, additive 3D printer and manufacturing equipment, as well as a dedicated CAD/Cam suite. Students will combine hands-on manufacturing with cutting edge 3D printing and laser cutting to create working models and prototypes.

For the Art section of the STEAM children will create, glaze and fire their own ceramics and develop their basic photography skills by taking photos that will then be printed on to acetate and developed in our dark room.

There is also a comprehensive evening programme to further enhance this wonderful experience. This unique opportunity will allow children to taste the full boarding experience under the care of a devoted pastoral team second to none. Children will be residential at our Sedbergh Prep site in Casterton for the Easter date, 4-7 April, and will stay at our Sedbergh School site during the summer, 1-4 August.

Jonathan Walker

Jonathan is a design and Technology teacher who, using his experiences in construction, sport and education, wants to help promote his subject and improve the student experience in and out of schools. In his current position, working with another school, he started an initiative to produce visors for the NHS and created two different visor designs, one using 3-D printers and the other using a laser cutter.

He has also recently been appointed as a consultant for the Design and Technology Association which requires him to liaise with large companies and cascade their design briefs down into schools and help develop the appropriate resources.

Olivia Marsh

Olivia is the art teacher at our own Sedbergh Prep School and creativity is a huge part of her life, from painting to ceramics and photography. She is passionate about sharing the ideas and techniques that she has picked up along the way.

Olivia will be holding workshops in ceramics and photography where she will teach children how to create their own pieces of work on the potters wheel and to understand the full ceramic process from clay to kiln. The photography workshop will make use of the schools dark room to develop the children's pictures on acetate to create a black and white image. This technique is great fun and will give an insight into photography before smart phones.
