John and Russell will once again lead the fun filled and inspiring residential Rugby course. The purpose is to create an environment for children that is inspiring and affords them opportunities to explore their game and further develop their skills and a really strong tactical awareness #BeatTheGame.

25 out of the 31 players that represented England in Japan at the Rugby World Cup have been coached by John and Russell in the England Rugby’s Performance Pathway and many more young stars continue to excel in the Gallagher Premiership. #InspiringYoungMinds

The development of contact skills will feature in both the Easter and the Summer Rugby courses and we will adhere to the regulations laid down by England Rugby. We will coach both sides of the ball (attack and defence) and we will empower the players to set and solve problems, make decisions and stretch their mindset and skills to leave as better players.

John started out as Head Coach of the Newcastle Falcons Academy before being promoted to Senior Director of Rugby. He was soon head hunted for a role with the RFU as Head Coach of the England U18 team with the clear brief to prepare players to win the World Cup.  John has been instrumental in developing high performing young players such as Anthony Watson, Owen Farrell, George Ford, Maro Itoje and the Vunipola brothers who all pay testament to his influence their careers.

As a player Russell won the Hieneken Cup with Bath and played 7s for England. Then as the assistant coach for England 7s he won back to back Dubai titles, Twickenham 7s and England's first ever victory at the Wellington 7s. He then worked alongside John for the England Rugby Elite Development Pathway.

"Really look forward to seeing your child at one of the camps. We had great fun last year at both the Easter week and the 3 weeks in the summer. Training with lots of players that you don’t know that well really affords you an opportunity to make new friendships and further develop relationships with players that you already know. We will focus on tactical development through our core skill games and then break down the skills and techniques that are going to support the individual player. We treat all players as individuals and will offer the appropriate level of challenge and support."

Your Greatest Rugby Moments?

England U18 beating SA Schools by 7 tries to 1 with Faz and Fordy at 10 and 12 was one of the most enjoyable games that I coached.

What are you looking forward to most for Sedbergh Easter & summer courses in 2020?

Getting to know the players and supporting their rugby development, the green door and Porridge in the morning.

Highlight of Sedbergh Courses last year?

Too many to mention, however coaching a player who was given a super power by his team mate and it changed his game was a great moment for me.

“I am seriously pumped for the Sedbergh rugby courses again after last year. Thread of Gold had a real impact on the kids' experience and also our enjoyment levels as coaches, focusing us not only on the #BeatTheGame mindset around developing skilful adaptable players, but more importantly, around developing great people.I have many highlights from the 2019 courses and so I'm excited to create even more memories next year....”

Your Greatest Rugby Moment?

Wellington Stadium after we beat NZ in the NZ Sevens Final, the Kiwi crowd left quickly and the coaches and players had a beer on the pitch in an empty stadium.

What are you looking forward to most for Sedbergh Easter & summer courses in 2020?

The interaction with all the kids and the opportunity to make a lasting impact.

Highlight of Sedbergh Courses last year?

SO many! Close run race between Crista in the silent disco, the Green Door and kids helping coach one another…
