From the Stone Age, when man first picked up crude stone tools, we have been defined by the products we make and the products we’ve made have defined us. Looking around any given room it is difficult to find something that has not been shaped by a designer or engineer. Design, Technology and Engineering (DTE) gives students a greater understanding of the designed and made world and encourages them to make positive improvements to the world around them.
Following on from last year’s STEAM course, the Sedbergh STEM Programme for 2019 in DTE is creative and practical yet academically rigorous. It is a chance for students to put knowledge into practice and draw on a wide range of disciplines such as science, mathematics, computing and art. Students will combine hands-on manufacturing with cutting edge 3D printing and laser cutting to create working models and prototypes. It is an opportunity for students to work collaboratively on fun and exciting projects whilst developing strategic problem-solving skills.
The programme aims to instil children with a love of learning, a continued curiosity for the subject, and to inspire the next generation of inventors, innovators and problem solvers.
The experience doesn’t stop there. With a comprehensive evening programme to further enhance our core values we have introduced a residential option for 8-11 year olds on courses based at Sedbergh Preparatory School. This unique opportunity allows children to taste the full boarding experience.
Design Sketching, 3D Computer Aided Design and 3D printing, Electronics and Soldering, Rockets and Racers, Structures and Design Problem Solving.
“It was a real pleasure and privilege to take part in a STEM Day at Sedbergh Prep School. Year 5 and 6 had an amazing day learning how to design and make their own rockets that they launched in the afternoon. A massive thank you to Sedbergh Prep School for working with and supporting us in this area of work”.
