We are truly delighted to welcome John Fletcher in his new role of Head Coach for the Sedbergh Rugby Programme. John has had an illustrious coaching career with extraordinary success in the development of high performing junior rugby players. Players such as Anthony Watson, Owen Farrell, George Ford, Maro Itoje and the Vunipola brothers have all paid testament to the influence of John on their careers.
John has had an incredible career in rugby coaching starting out as Head Coach of the Newcastle Falcons Academy before being promoted to Senior Director of Rugby. John was soon head hunted for a role with the Rugby Football Union as Head Coach of the England Under 18 team with a clear brief of developing players that one day will have the capability of winning a Rugby World Cup for England Rugby, many of whom we see wearing the red rose today.
John and his coaches will create a genuinely exciting environment for children to explore and learn in. They will be inspired to value and drive their personal development in preparing for the game of the future. Innovative and creative coaching will be at the heart of the programme. ‘Low and High numbers’ as opposed to ‘Backs and Forwards’, ‘Battle for the number 35 shirt’ and ‘Target Men’ in game situations will all contribute to the world class development programme.
I am really excited to be working with Sedbergh. After meeting with the Sedbergh team, I share their vision of ensuring that the courses will be the best experience the young people could have. I feel that my experience with England Rugby as Head of the Performance Pathway has given me an insight into what a great learning environment looks like and how important it is to develop the person as well as the player. We will use the Threads of Gold and the Principles of Play as a framework to develop all of the players as individuals. There will be a strong tactical (#BeatTheGame) theme running throughout the course and this will ensure that all players are encouraged to explore what they are capable of. I cannot wait to get started and inspire the next generation of rugby players.
“John Fletcher knows his stuff inside out and always gives you the details you need for the ‘how to’ part of coaching, but his skill is that he knows how to communicate it. He has knowledge and incredible people skills.
Fletch created a great team environment and guided his players brilliantly, but he also spent time with everyone. He listened, made the effort to understand each individual and made us all feel important.
With very few people have I ever felt such a good balance between being coached and being given the freedom to express myself and my ideas. As a team, I don’t think we ever performed so consistently well as we did under Fletch’s reign”
